KUNSTVEREIN FÜR DIE RHEINLANDE UND WESTFALEN
Established in 1829, the Kunstverein für die Rheinlande und Westfalen is one of the oldest examples of its kind in Germany. Since its establishment the emphasis has always be on the presentation, communication and discussion of contemporary art.
Since 1967 the Kunstverein has shared premises with then newly re-inaugurated Kunsthalle in the modernist building erected by Konrad Beckman on the Grabbeplatz. Situated in the centre of the city, the Kunstverein has been presenting its programme in close proximity to the Düsseldorf Art Academy, as well as to the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen (established in 1985) ever since.
The renovation of the building in 2001 by the rheinflügel team of architects and at the behest of the Kunstverein returned the building's brutalist architecture to its original aspect.
Alongside rotating exhibitions the profile of the Kunstverein is determined by the specific communication of the social relevance of contemporary art. This also includes the development of models, the redefining of the relationship between fine art and its viewership, as well as providing a commentary on the present day, its challenges and visions. The Kunstverein für die Rheinlande und Westfalen offers numerous guided tours, talks, films, symposia and outings with a view to facilitating access to the world of contemporary art for members and visitors alike and to make productive use of its exhibitions.
In 2001 the Kunstverein was awarded the Jürgen Ponto Foundation's Prize Junge Kunst in Kunstvereinen [Emerging Art in the Kunstvereine] for consistency in its programme.
