Ulla von Brandenburg's work is based on historic motifs of different provenance which she takes up in abstract form and alienates medially. Scenes taken from theater, Hollywood cinema or literature comprise a pictorial repertoire that seems to anticipate situations of modern upheaval. The cutout or silhouette, a genuine technique of Romanticism, was highly developed in the literary salons and courts of 18th and early 19th century. Ulla von Brandenburg replaces the fragility of the cutout by a laminar composition and an almost expressionist persistent motif. The feminine connotation of the cutout is withdrawn and substituted for a snap-shot rich of references. Those in turn present imagery marked as modern from a contemporary perspective without reducing them to direct references. * 1974 in Karlsruhe, lives in Paris |
